Instructions for Making Layered Chicken Soup in a Jar
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
- Cook the chicken: Season and cook the chicken breast as desired (boiled, grilled, or baked) until fully cooked. Once cooled, shred or dice the chicken.
- Cook the rice or grain: If using rice, pasta, or quinoa, cook it according to package instructions, drain, and let cool. This helps prevent the jar from becoming mushy.
Step 2: Layer the Ingredients in the Jar
- Layer 1 – Seasonings and Flavors: Start with the dry seasonings (bouillon powder, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, salt, and pepper) at the bottom of the jar. This ensures they dissolve evenly when hot water is added.
- Layer 2 – Vegetables: Add the carrots, celery, and zucchini. These veggies hold up well to hot water and provide a sturdy base layer.
- Layer 3 – Cooked Chicken: Add the shredded chicken on top of the veggies. Keeping the meat near the middle helps the flavors infuse the soup when it’s mixed.
- Layer 4 – Cooked Rice or Grain: Add the cooked rice or quinoa as the next layer. This is where you can swap in any grain you prefer.
- Layer 5 – Leafy Greens: Finally, top with baby spinach leaves and green onions. These more delicate ingredients will wilt beautifully when hot water is added.
- Top Layer – Optional Ingredients: If desired, add a few pinches of red pepper flakes or fresh herbs at the very top for extra flavor.
Step 3: Storing the Jar
- Seal the jar tightly with a lid and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- If preparing multiple jars, label them with the date and contents to keep track.
